Esri Young Scholars Award – 2019

The Esri Young Scholars Award (YSA) program was launched in 2012 to recognize the exemplary work in geospatial sciences of undergraduate and graduate students in universities around the world.

Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute), the world leader of GIS software, organizes the YSA, and, Esri China (HK) gives full support to engage tertiary educators and university students in Hong Kong to participate in this program.

The goal of the competition is to encourage and recognize university students who can create more innovative GIS applications that lead to a better society and meet the diversified needs of Hong Kong metropolis city.
The Esri Young Scholars Award gives students in Hong Kong the opportunity to be part of the world’s largest spatial technology conference. In addition, the top 3 winners will be awarded an summer internship place at the Urban Renewal Authority.

a. One Champion: The champion will win a trip to San Diego, California, USA to attend the Esri User Conference – with benefits including:
  • Round-trip flight ticket between Hong Kong and Los Angeles;
  • Hotel Accommodation in San Diego;
  • Meal allowance;
  • Registration for Esri Education User Conference and Esri International User Conference;
  • Free subscription of ArcGIS for Personal User license for one year;
  • Attend the Esri Special Achievement in GIS Award presentation ceremony to receive the Young Scholar Award Certificate;
  • Opportunity to join social events to meet and network with other Young Scholar winners from around the world;
  • An summer internship place at the Urban Renewal Authority.
b. One First Runner-up: The Frist Runner-up will receive the following:
  • Award Certificate
  • Book vouchers (value HKD1,000);
  • Free subscription of ArcGIS for Personal User license for one year;
  • An summer internship place at the Urban Renewal Authority.
c. One Second Runner-up: The Second Runner up will receive the following:
  • Award Certificate;
  • Book vouchers (value HKD500);
  • Free subscription of ArcGIS for Personal User license for one year;
  • An summer internship place at the Urban Renewal Authority.
d. A Certificate of Merit will be given to at least 3 (three) contestant.
Participating Requirements
  • Full-time students aged 18 or above, who are affiliated to a tertiary institute registered in Hong Kong in an undergraduate or graduate program, or have obtained the academic qualification during 2019 are welcome to join the competition.
  • Each candidate must submit the following deliverables:
    • a self-explained project presentation by Esri Story Map Esri Story Map
      (2018 award-winning Story Map:;
    • an A0 size poster with map elements to summarize the work and visualize the project effort i.e. 84.1cm x 118.9cm; in two file formats (a) AI/PSD format and (b) PDF format in 300 dpi);
    • a portrait photo.
  • Since the submissions will be judged anonymously to ensure a fair assessment for all entries, please do not put your name, department name or university name in the poster and Story Map. Please use an alias name if the project is related to your campus.
  • Group project or research is not accepted.
  • Only one entry is allowed to be submitted per candidate.
  • All submissions must fully comply with U.S. Export laws and all other applicable laws.
  • Esri reserves the right to reject any submission.
  • Submission deadline extended to 8 April 2019 (Monday), 6:00pm.

Judging Criteria
Esri China (HK) will form a judging panel including the representatives from higher education and industry sectors in Hong Kong. Project will be evaluated primarily according to the following criteria.
